The Evidence-Based Investor is a blog about investing and asset management. But, very occasionally, I do post content about other subjects and this, I hope you’ll agree, is an exception.
No one has been more supportive of my work for Sensible Investing TV and thereafter for TEBI than Gina and Alan Miller. Over the years those two have campaigned tirelessly for greater transparency in the fund industry and better outcomes for investors.
This week I’m going to be serialising a video interview I’ve just recorded with Gina about the recent FCA report on UK asset management and the future of investing, and another interview with Alan.
But first, I couldn’t speak to Gina without asking her about the story that’s propelled her into the spotlight in recent weeks — her successful High Court action against the UK Government for trying to trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty without a debate in Parliament.
Although, like Gina, I supported Remain in the referendum, I respect the result. That said, leaving the EU raises so many big and complex issues that we owe it to ourselves as a nation, and to future generations, to ensure the best possible outcome for the United Kingdom. For me, that can only happen if MPs, our elected representatives, are allowed to debate Britain’s exit from the EU in Parliament.
In this video, Gina explains why she’s confident that the Government will fail in its attempt to overturn the High Court ruling at the Supreme Court; what she thinks will happen after that; and how the death threats she received in the immediate aftermath of the ruling have resumed since the trial of the man who murdered the Labour MP and Remain campaigner Jo Cox.
