It’s funny, you’d expect evidence-based investing to be popular in Germany. The efficiency and elegant simplicity of indexing, you’d have thought, combined with the academic rigour underpinning it, would particularly appeal to German tastes.
Yet German investors are just as much in the Dark Ages as British ones, if not even more so. They typically have much of their wealth tied up in expensive insurance plans for a start. Asset management is dominated by big banks who charge high fees for active funds which, as they do the world over, consistently fail to beat their benchmarks.
Thankfully, though, there are signs the tide is turning. Dimensional Fund Advisors, based in Berlin, is starting to make real inroads, and my own company, Regis Media, is now working with four German firms in explaining the benefits of a low-cost, low-maintenance, highly diversified approach. Evidence.
